{"id":21,"date":"2019-11-29T19:25:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T19:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging.mtgcommander.net\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2019-12-29T23:41:08","modified_gmt":"2019-12-29T23:41:08","slug":"rules","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/staging.mtgcommander.net\/index.php\/rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Commander Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Philosophy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Before reading the rules below, please read <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.mtgcommander.net\/index.php\/the-philosophy-of-commander\/\">the philosophy of commander<\/a>; simply following the rules is not sufficient to ensure a good play experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deck Construction Rules<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Players choose a legendary creature as the &#8220;Commander&#8221; for their deck.&nbsp;<\/li><li>A card&#8217;s <em>color identity<\/em> is its color plus the color of any mana symbols in the card&#8217;s rules text. A card&#8217;s color identity is established before the game begins, and cannot be changed by game effects. <\/li><li>A Commander deck must contain exactly 100 cards, including the Commander.<\/li><li>With the exception of basic lands, no two cards in the deck may have the same English name. Some cards (e.g. <a class=\"deckbox_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deckbox.org\/mtg\/Relentless Rats\">Relentless Rats<\/a>) may have rules text that overrides this restriction.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Play Rules<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\"><li>Players begin the game with 40 life.<\/li><li>Commanders begin the game in the Command Zone. While a Commander is in the command zone, it may be cast, subject to the normal timing restrictions for casting creatures. Its owner must pay [mana]2[\/mana] for each time it was previously cast from the command zone; this is an additional cost.<\/li><li>If a Commander would be put into a library, hand, graveyard or exile from anywhere, its owner may choose to move it to the command zone instead.<\/li><li>Being a Commander is not a characteristic [MTG CR109.3], it is a property of the card and tied directly to the physical card. As such, &#8220;Commander-ness&#8221; cannot be copied or overwritten by continuous effects. The card retains it&#8217;s commander-ness through any status changes, and is still a commander even when controlled by another player.<\/li><li>If a player has been dealt 21 points of <strong>combat damage<\/strong> by a particular Commander during the game, that player loses a game. <\/li><li>Commanders <strong>are<\/strong> subject to the Legend rule; a player cannot control more than one legend with the same name.<\/li><li>Abilities which bring card(s) you own from outside the game into the game (such as <a class=\"deckbox_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deckbox.org\/mtg\/Living Wish\">Living Wish<\/a>; <a class=\"deckbox_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deckbox.org\/mtg\/Spawnsire of Ulamog\">Spawnsire of Ulamog<\/a>; <a class=\"deckbox_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deckbox.org\/mtg\/Karn, the Great Creator\">Karn, the Great Creator<\/a>) do not function in Commander.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Philosophy Before reading the rules below, please read the philosophy of commander; simply following the rules is not sufficient to ensure a good play experience.
